The beautiful village of Maun is one of five largest towns in Botswana. There are more than 55,980 people, some of which are attracted by the tourism opportunity living in huts and modern buildings in this small town.
It is obviously because of the fever of tourism the village has extended along the Thamalakane River holding numerous of shopping centers and safari and air services bureaus and become the administrative center of Ngamiland district. However, the farmers still bring their cattle to the village to sell their stock.
The town was founded as capital of Batawana people in 1915 to support the activities they do daily including cattle ranching, small scale farming, fishing and hunting.
Nowadays, the tourism growth has helped the local people and the country as well and played the principle role in the development of the beautiful Maun village and other towns in Botswana.
You will find most of the travel agencies, restaurants and shops at the center of the beautiful Maun village, while most of the budget campsites and lodges are at the village of Matlapaneng, about 9 kilometers at the northeast of Maun.

You should plan your trip well before your arrival to the beautiful Maun village. Your travel agency may arrange everything to tour the delta village with their branches or affiliated travel agencies in Botswana.
So, it would wise to know your hotel, when you take a safari into some places in the delta, where to take a safari plane, where to get a land cruiser, where to get a mokoro and so on.
You will lose money and be lost if you just got there without planning and knowing what to do, when, how and where. Any hotel you book at could arrange many things to do in the beautiful Maun delta village, the villages near it and other cities in Botswana.
But, unless you arrange that from the start, you may find yourself in a position to delay some of your trips and stay some more days in the hotel.
Barclays Bank and the Standard Chartered Bank have branches in the beautiful Maun village at the Mall with ATM and foreign exchange for both cash and travelers cheques with good rates. Barclays Bank charges 2.5% commission for cash and travelers cheques. There is no commission for Visa and Master-cards.
Standard Chartered Bank offers 3% commission for both cash and travelers cheques. First National Bank Botswana and Stanbic Bank at Maun International Airport have also ATMs. In addition, there are some bureaus for money exchange.
While you cannot draw money from ATMs using master cards at those banks, but the exception is Stanbic Bank near the airport. (This information could be incorrect, because a kind of development in this regard might have taken place, since the date we published this page).
In addition to its branch in the beautiful Maun village this bank has also branches in Gaborone, Francistown, Palapye and Mogoditshane.

Maun General Hospital is at Shorobe Road about one kilometer from the center of the town. The hospital was inaugurated in June 2003 by President Festus Mogae and the development ran to complete exterior sections on 2008.
But, as in other hospitals in Africa, you could see patients stuffing in long queues.
The Delta Medical Center is at Tsheke Tsheko Road near the tourist bureau and it offers its medical services and 24 hour emergencies. The medical company, MedRescue international offer rescue services in the areas of wildlife.
You could find those private medical companies in Palapye and Francistown too. The police station is at Sir Seretse Khama Road.

There are some places you may want to visit in the beautiful town of Maun.
The Crocodile Farm is about 14,2 kilometers at the south of the Mall. You can reach it through the Standard Chartered Bank, the post office south of it and then taking Tsheke Tsheko Road towards the southern part of the town.
Prepare to enjoy good time and take all you need and know how to protect yourself while you take the mokoro on the swamps of the delta.
Nhabe Museum is on Sir Seretse Khama road at the south of Air Botswana. It is housed in a historic building the British have built in 1939 and used it during the Second World Waras a post to watch the movement of the German troops in Namibia.
The museum hosts few displays showing the history of Ngamiland district, which includes northwestern Botswana with the Okavango Delta, the Okavango Rivers and all the safaris and the tourist attractions in the area.
In addition, Nhabe Museum houses the Bailey Art Center with its complete work projects, which include paintings, crafts as pottery and baskets and screen prints and support the local artists and craftsmen/women to sell these products.

The Environmental Educational Center of the beautiful Maun village is in Maun Wildlife Reserve on the eastern bank of the Thamalakane River, just short distance at the north of Sekgoma Road and northeast of Maun Lodge and Thamalakane Bridge.
It is oriented towards teaching children about their environment, developing environmental awareness and doing some researches in cooperation with educational instates and organizations including the Maun Campus of the University of Botswana.
Where to find other places you may consider to visit in the beautiful Maun village?
The long distance bus station is and the combos you may want to take to Shorobe are near Barclays Bank at the west and northwest in the area of the Mall. At the west of them are a supermarket and Botswana book Center south of the supermarket.
Further to the south along Tsheke Tsheka Road are the Standard Chartered Bank and the Post Office. If you continued on this road to the south, you will reach the Crocodile Farm. Across Tsheke Tsheka Road at the northeast from the Mall is Shop-Rite Supermarket.

The PostNet is at the northeast of it followed by Riley's Garage at the north and Riley's Hotel. The Delta Medical Center is at the west of the Riley's and across Tsheke Tsheka Road. The Tourist Office is at the north of it.
Crossing the traffic round where Tsheke Tsheka Road and Sekgoma Road end, you will reach the Police Station and the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (DWNP) on Kudu Street. The Immigration is short distance from here at Sir Seretse Khama Road.
If you continued to the north on this street, you will reach Nhabe Museum and Air Botswana at the north and just near the corner where the Airport Avenue ends at Sir Seretse Khama Road. At the north of this direction is the Rendezvous Supermarket and the Taxi Stand at the north of it.
Sunny Bureau de Exchange is across the road from this point to the east. There are some other locations at the west of these places on or near Mathiba 1 Street. The Craft Center is at the corner of Mophane Street and before the street turns to meet Mathiba 1 Street.

Buck and Hunter supermarket is at the north of it followed by Avis Car Rental and the Hilary's. At the north of this direction is the Wilderness Safaris and Safari Destinations. Travel Wild is at the north of this place on the corner of Mathiba 1 Street and Airport Avenue.
Ker and Downey tourism is across the avenue towards the north. At the north of it, is the craft shops "African Arts and Images" and Bushman Craft Shop. The Airport and the Airport Terminal are at the west of these places across Mathiba 1 Street.
This street leads you down to the south to Motgentsela Tree Lodge about 12 kilometers at the southwest. If you continued on Sir Seretse Khama Road from the Taxi Stand to the northwest, you will reach Matlapaneng.
If you continued from Shop-Rite supermarket to the west, you will reach Thamalakane Bridge. At the southwest of it is Maun Lodge near Sekgoma Road. From this point, you could cross the road to Maun Environmental Education Center and Maun Wildlife Reserve at the north of this location.
