Avoid the Protected Beaches of Zakynthos!

The protected beaches of Zakynthos are at the south and the southwest of the island. The loggerhead turtles breed here. However, few areas on those protected beaches in the beautiful Zakynthos Island are tourism active.

The beautiful Beach of Greakas or Yerakas Beach is one of the protected beaches of Zakynthos. It is at the edge of the Peninsula of Vasilikos or Vassilikos in the southeastern part of Zakynthos Island overlooking the Islet of Kalonisi. It is long, huge and sandy beach with shallow waters.

The beach stretches below the green heights, some of which giving shades in front of the beach. Across the water from the beach, there is a green peak on the water and the sea runs under some peaks at the far end, which stretch across the water with green summits.

This beach is one of the nesting grounds of the endangered loggerhead turtle. The other beaches are Daphni, Kalamaki, Laganas, Marathonisi and Sekania. The government of Greece issued regulations to protect the nesting grounds of the loggerhead turtle and designated areas on the beaches on the Bay of Laganas for the public and the tourists.

In Laganas Bay is the Islet of Marathonissi or Marathonisi Islet overlooking the beaches of Keri and Gerakas, where the loggerhead turtles nest in the Caretta-Caretta area of the beach.

The beautiful Beach of Sekania is one of the protected beaches of Zakynthos. It is also included in the National Marine Park of Zakynthos in Vassilikos Peninsula. It is prohibited during the breeding season of the loggerhead turtle, which covers almost the high season in summer.

The beautiful Beach of Kalamaki is one of the protected beaches of Zakynthos. It is wide long beach with clear water and golden sand at the south of Zakynthos International Airport and very near from it. From Kalamaki Beach, people could see flights when planes take off high or when they land to the airport.

There are white sun beds and white umbrellas. The green cliffs are the sides of the beach and at the top is Kalamaki Beach Taverna. The beach has wide sides marked at the top by the Greek flag on one of the heights at the side of the beach.

The beautiful Beach of Laganas is one of the protected beaches of Zakynthos. It is on the Bay of Laganas and is about 8 kilometres from Zakynthos Town, at the south coast, southwest of the capital. The Greek National Road 35 links Laganas to the capital of the Island, Zakynthos.

The area here has three restricted sides declared as the National Marine Park of Zakynthos and the legislations prohibit any activities in the nesting ground of the loggerhead turtle on those three areas of Laganas Beach.

However, there are some activities off the mentioned area such as running speedboats and doing other water sports.

The resort of Laganas has developed in spite of the activities of the environmental protection body in the area. So, there are so many traditional and modern apartments, hotels, rooms and studios along the coastline and behind it including Camping Laganas, Akrogiali Beach Studios, Denise Beach Hotel, Anastasia Beach Hotel and Hotel Meandros.

The beautiful Beach of Keri is small, narrow and pebble beach at the southwest of Laganas and south of the village of Keri. The Greek National Road 35 also links the village of Keri to the capital of the island.

It is on the road that runs from Laganas to the west along the coastline overlooking the Islet of Marathonisi. Olive groves and vineyards run at the sides of the road until the beach and the area is green and naturally beautiful.

Keri Beach has a sign of the main road and there is a fishing harbour beside the beach. From the small port, excursion boats run to other sights in the surroundings such as Keri Caves and Marathonisi Islet. Some services on the beach offer diving courses and hire motorcycles.

The beautiful Daphni Beach or Daphne Beach is one of the protected beaches of Zakynthos. It is sandy and green beach under the green heights with some umbrellas and sun beds. It is ideal for families although it has a protected area for the loggerhead turtle that belongs to the National Marine Park of Zakynthos.

The legislations prohibit water sports and yachting along the beach and the surroundings to protect the nesting grounds of the loggerhead turtles.

The area of Daphni is mountainous, green and full of forests. It experienced some wildfires and the fire-jets were always fast at the sights to fight those fires.

The beautiful Beach of Marathonisi is one of the protected beaches of Zakynthos. It is on the Islet of Marathonisi on Laganas Bay at the southwest of the Island of Zakynthos.

Marathonisi is small, uninhabited islet. The area of the Marathonisi Beach is also a nesting ground for the Caretta-Caretta loggerhead turtle and is one of those protected areas.

However, there are two beaches in the Islet of Marathonisi. One of those beautiful beaches is at the north of the islet, which lies off the southwestern coast of the Island of Zakynthos.

It is long beach, with white sands and clear water. This is one of the breeding grounds of the loggerhead turtle and the other beach is at the south.

The beautiful Beach of Marathia is one of the protected beaches of Zakynthos. It is Marathia at the southwestern coast of the Island of Zakynthos and is about 12.5 kilometres at the southwest of Laganas.
