Here below is general information about the Island of Alonissos, take care of it and please drop me some informative lines if you had been there one day. Thanks.
The beautiful Island of Alonissos or Alonissos is one of 24 inhabited and uninhabited islands in the Sporades group of islands on the Aegean Sea. It is off the eastern coast of Greece, at the east of the islands of Euboea and Skopelos, the gate of the wind and very close to the mainland of Greece.
There are 24 islands in the Sporades archipelago. However, only 4 islands in this group are permanently inhabited islands, all of which we cover here.
The first of the largest inhabited islands in this group is the beautiful Skyros Island. The second is the beautiful Skopelos Island. The third is the beautiful Alonissos Island. The fourth is the beautiful Skiathos Island.
All of those beautiful Sporades islands spread over an area of 275.7 square kilometres with 13,556 residents.
The beautiful Euboea Island or Evia is the second largest island in Greece after Crete and the nearest island at the west of the Sporades group of islands.
Alonissos Island has beautiful green landscape that stretches at the back of the cliffs along the western coast from the north to the east. Fruits, pine, arbutus, oak and mastic trees cover most of the beautiful Alonissos Island.
While the western coast is cliffy, the eastern coast has steep slopes. Therefore, almost all of the beautiful sandy and pebble beaches are on the eastern coast and the southern coast of Alonissos.
There are about 8 beautiful beaches at the eastern coast starting from the central eastern coast and scattering to the south and about 3 beautiful beaches at the south of the island.
The capes and coves at the north are Cape Gerakas, Gerakas Cove and Cape Gregali followed by the Blue Cove down to the south of it at the northeastern coast.
Cape Kokkinokastro is on the eastern coast near the south, with a beach by the same name at the south of it and Cape Marpounta is at the corner of the southeastern coast. Cape Kokkinos is at the southwestern coast.
Cape Maistra is at the western coast followed by Cape Kalami at the north of it on the central western coast.
The bays of the beautiful Alonissos Island are Patitiri Bay at the southeast and Megali Ammos Bay at the southwest.
Camping grounds are in different places, but two of them are Ikaros Camping at the central eastern coast and Camping Rocks at the southeastern coast above Cape Marpounta.
The coastal areas and the green cliffs, with white villages hanging at the top make the island's beauty with full views to the cleanest waters of the Aegean Sea around the island. For this reason, they declared Alonissos coast with its clean water a national marine park.
The name of the place was Ikos Evonymos Kyriakos in the ancient era. The ancient capital was in the south of the island at the west of Patitiri.
Before 1952, the beautiful Alonissos Island had larger winery production from the stretched vineyards amongst the Sporades group of islands, until the Phylloxera (L.) hit the vineyards.
After the earthquake in 1956, most of the inhabitants in the traditional village of Alonissos and some other villages in the surroundings fled to resettle on some dwellings in the areas of Patitiri.
In the Middle Ages, the residents of Alonissos village called it Chiliodromia, which means a thousand routes village, as they call it Liadromia and Heliodromia. However, they omitted the first name to call it Chora, a name they used until the 19th century.
The people now work in the agricultural sector, small trade, fishing and few of them work in tourism. In their mixed farms, they grow mainly almonds, grapes, figs and olives.
Ferryboats and hydrofoil connect the beautiful Alonissos Island with other inhabited islands in the Sporades group, as well as the mainland of Greece. Ferries run more than once daily between Alonissos and Skopelos and between Alonissos and Skiathos.
There is daily excursion to Thessaloniki in addition to one daily excursion to Agios Konstantinos and two or three excursion weekly to the same port.
Hydrofoils run between the beautiful Island of Alonissos and Skopelos, Skiathos, Glossa and Agios Konstantinos more than three times daily in summer.
Buses run every hour in summer from Patitiri bus station at the opposite direction of the quay to the old Alonissos village and from this village there is a bus to Steni Vala and some nearby villages.
However, rental boats and water taxi boats are available for excursions around the island and to the beautiful beaches. There are also motorcycle rental services in the capital of the island.
The advices given to those who hire boats and motorcycles are to take care because the land is steep and slippery, even at the shale and sand of the beaches.
