What is Beautiful in Chios Island?

The beautiful Chios Island is the second biggest island in the northeastern group of islands on the Aegean Sea after Lesvos Island and the fifth largest island of the beautiful Greek islands as a whole after Crete, Evia, Lesvos and Lesbos.

The other islands in this group are Agios Efstratios, Cunda, Fourni Korseon, Icaria or Ikaria, beautiful Imbros Island, Lemnos, Lesbos, Lesvos, beautiful Samos Island, Samothrace, beautiful Tenedos Island, Thasos and Thymaina. Chios was part of the Byzantine empire, the Genoa State and Turkey by different names. Genoese of Genoa City appeared with their city as independent state before 1100 and occupied Chios Island in 1346 until the Ottoman conquered them in 1566.

During the medieval times, people knew it as Ofioussa and Pityoussa and as Scio and Chio after that. The Ottoman called it Sakiz.

After the first Balkan War and the London Treaty in 1913, Turkey recognized the Greek sovereignty over this island.

The beautiful Chios Island stretches 859 square kilometres (842 square kilometres in other sources) along the western coast of Turkey and is about 7 kilometres far from Asia Minor coast and it has 51,936 populations.

However, Chios Strait that separates it from Karaburun Peninsula, one of Turkey's territories in the west of the main Turkish land is 8 kilometres wide.

It is known for its mastic gum, merchant shipping and medieval villages. The monastery of Nea Moni in one of these villages remains from the 11th century and it is listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

This historical monastery is in the centre of the Beautiful Chios Island between the villages of Avgonyma to the west and Karyes to the east.

The Byzantine Emperor Constantine IX built it after 3 monks living in caves the area had petitioned him while he was in exile on the island of Mytilene.

It is one of the landmarks in beautiful Chios Island with the Museum of Nea Moni in addition to the Archaeological Museum of Chios, the Byzantine Museum of Chios, the Palace of Ioustinian and the Maritime Museum of Chios.

This beautiful Island of Chios is connected regionally by sea and air with other islands and airports in Greece and Thessaloniki. The main port is in Chios. See Chios Town.

Flights from Chios Airport, which lies about 4-5 kilometres from Chios Town reach 3,4 flights to Athens daily, 3,4 flights to Thessaloniki weekly and 2,3 flights to Lesvos weekly.

Sea traffic becomes hot with summer, as daily boats sail between Chios Port and the Turkish port of Cesme starting from May to October. A ferry sails daily to Piraeus Port in the main Greek land and another one leaves for Lesvos daily in summer.

There is also a ferry to Alexandroupolis via Limnos and a ferry to Thessaloniki via Lemnos every week. A boat leaves of Rhodes and Kos weekly and three boats leave to Samos weekly. There are boats to Ikaria, Fourni and Psara weekly. Daily boat connects it with Inousses.

Busses connects the capital of Chios all the week around except Sunday with Pyrgi, Mesta, Kardamyla, Langada, Volissos and the main beaches of Lithi, Kampia, Karfas, Nagos. Read about beautiful beaches in Chios Island here.

There are ten municipalities, eight of them are in the interior of the island and two are in two offshore islands.

The most populated municipalities are Chios, Homeroupolis or Omiroupolis, Oinousses, Mastichochoria and Ionia, while the most largest in land areas are Chios, Mastichochoria, Amani, Omiroupolis and Kardamyla.

The eight municipalities in the beautiful Chios Island are the Municipality of Chios, the Municipality of Agios Minas, the Municipality of Kardamyla, the Municipality of Homeroupolis, the Municipality of Amani, the Municipality of Kampohoron, the Municipality of Mastichochoria and the Municipality of Ionia.
