Kos has a round harbour with tight narrow mouth, with a ferry quay located at the right tip of it and the port of the excursion boats lies down at the bottom of the harbour line. Beyond this line the land is beautifully lush and covered by palm trees, pines, hibiscus and oleander.
The earthquake in 1933 damaged almost all of the old Town of Kos and there are few parts and many ruins left in the town. Therefore, the people consider it as the second important archaeological site in the Dodecanese group of islands after Rhodes, the capital city of the Greek Rhodes Island.
The Knights' Castle covers almost most of the port, while the ruins from the Hellenistic and Roman times scatter in many places in the beautiful town of Kos. The ferry quay lies at the tip of land north of this castle.
The remaining part of the old town of Kos is between the streets of Kolokotroni, Akti Koundourioti, Vasileos Pavlou and Eleftheriou Venizelou. There are modern shops of jewellery and boutiques in this town.
The main and central square in the beautiful Kos Town is Plateia Eleftherias. It is about one kilometre at the south of the harbour. Akti Koundourioti Street runs beyond the harbour curve. At the eastern side south of the Knights' castle, the waterfront runs as Akti Miaouli and changes to Vasileos Georgiou.
From this direction in the beautiful Kos Town and downwards, it takes the name of Georgiou Papandreou, one of the former Greek prime ministers and the first of 3 Papandreou family members to take office. This route on the waterfront leads to the beaches of Psalidi, Therma Loutra and Agios Fokas. See beautiful Kos beaches.
The Alpha Bank has automatic money exchange machine on Akti Koundourioti. The bank with its ATM is at the south across Plateia Eleftherias. The National Bank of Greece is on Riga Fereou, at the west of the Alpha automatic exchange machine and at the north of the Archaeological Museum.
The post office is on El Venizelou at the south of Plateia Eleftherias and the north of Alpha Bank. The Municipal Tourist Office is on Vasileos Georgiou 1. The hospital is on Ippokratous 32 and at the east of the post office. The police headquarters are in the Municipality. There's a port police on Akti Koundourioti.

The beautiful Kos Town was and is the home of some famous people. Here are two of them, with different presence and atmosphere of influence. The first is Hippocrates, Father of Medicine and the second is Ptolemy II of Egypt.
Useful Resources:
Hippocrates: Father of Medicine
Medicines were not based on science but on driving evil spirits from the body. Hippocrates' scientific approach to the study and treatment of disease has deservedly earned for him the title "Father of Medicine". He was born on the island of Cos in 460 B.C., and his works remained for centuries the foundation of medical and biographical knowledge.
In addition, Hippocrates' daring approach to the problems of sickness and disease drove the opening wedge into the wall of fear that surrounded human illnesses. The medicine science honours Hippocrates' scrupulous attention to professional ethics by the medical oath that bears his name as "The Hippocratic Oath".
Ptolemy of Egypt
Ptolemy was the creator of the longest lasting of the Hellenistic kingdoms. He created a state whose cultural importance was unparalleled until the coming of Rome. He encouraged the erection of the Pharaohs Lighthouse, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, as well as creating a library, which eventually contained the greatest collection of books until relatively recent times. Ptolemy's institution of higher learning, the Museum, gave birth to the greatest advancements in science before the seventeenth century of our own era.
Early Hellenistic Coinage from the Accession of Alexander to the Peace of Apamaea (336-188 B.C.)
This is the first published full study of early Hellenistic coinage. It provides the history of the coinage of Alexander the Great and his successors in the near and Middle East. It includes the cities of Greece and Asia Minor. It tracks this history down to the establishment of Rome as a major power in the East after the defeat of Antiochus III of Syria at the battle of Magnesia in 189 BC. The full-illustrated study provides historians and collectors with a detailed and authoritative guide to the coinage of the period.
