What Did You Know about the Beautiful Lefkada Island?

The beautiful Lefkada Island or Lefkas Island, or Leucas Island is the fourth largest island in the Greek Ionian group of islands and the fourteenth amongst the largest islands in Greece as a whole.

It lies on the Ionian Sea, very close at the west of the eastern shore of Greece, stretching to 325 square kilometers and it is on the ferry-way between the beautiful Corfu Island at the northwest of it and the beautiful Kefallonia Island at the south of it.

The other three largest islands in the Ionian group of islands are the beautiful Kefallonia Island, the beautiful Corfu Island and the beautiful Zakynthos Island or Zante Island.

The beautiful Island of Lefkada is linked to the mainland of Greece by a narrow isthmus. When the Corinthians occupied the land in the 6th century BC they thought of digging a canal in the area between the island and Greece and they dug a canal with a 25 meters strait in the 7th century BC. Before that time and before the Hellenic period the first inhabitants in the island were Leleges, ancient people in the 8,000 BC.

There are some beautiful views from the green peaks and from the green fertile fields of the vineyards, olive groves and fir and pine forests. The eastern coast of the beautiful Lefkada Island is more developed and therefore it is heavily populated than the western coast.

Buses and ferries link the island with Greece and other islands. There is no airport in the beautiful Lefkada Island and the nearest airport is about 20 kilometers far in Aktion Airport near Preveza in Greece. Daily flights connect Athens to Preveza and flights three times a week take off from Preveza to Corfu and Kefallonia.

Daily ferries sail from the island to other islands although the schedule of ferries changes every time. Four ferries in the island sail daily from Nydri port in Lefkada to the other port of Vasiliki in Lefkada, the port of Frikes in the Island of Ithaki and the port of Fiskardo in Kefallonia.

KTEL Bus Station is on the main waterfront in the beautiful Lefkada Island and from there buses run daily to Athens, weekly to Patra, Thessaloniki and Preveza. However, bus connection is something to wonder about, as the buses from Lefkada stop in Preveza and a taxi is needed to reach the airport. Therefore, a taxi is expensive.

Buses run frequently 20 times from Lefkada Town to Nydri or Nidri and Vlyho in the hot season. Seven buses run to Agios Nikitas and Karya village, five daily buses that go to Vasiliki, two daily buses in the season to Kalamitsi and Athani.

Buses run also in different times to other villages in the beautiful Lefkada Island and there are taxi services and car and bike rental services.

There are more than 22,500 inhabitants in the beautiful Lefkada Island. The prefecture of Lefkada includes Lefkada Island in addition to the smaller islands of Kalamos, Kastos, Madouri, Meganisi, Skorpios and Sparti.
