The Capital Town of Hora, Patmos Island, Greece:
Hora or Chora seems has nothing special to modern life and it lives in the past more than it exists today. Therefore, it could not be interesting for modern travellers, who like to enjoy some pleasures. It satisfies scholars and other researchers in history and theology more than it does for normal travellers.
The town has renovated white houses belonged to the wealth families during the 17th and the 18th centuries. The buildings in the white town start around the monastery of St. John and there are some paths leading to it from different places.
An ancient Byzantine path leads to it from the port of Skala. This path starts from the Hora-Skala road up to the town.
Walkers on this path come regularly from the port in summer, to enjoy walking and seeing some of the history of Patmos in its remains. All the monasteries here including the monastery of the Apocalyse belong to St John.
The Port of Skala, Patmos Island, Greece:
The beautiful Skala Town is well protected with its harbour and the town around the curve of the bay. It is a white traditional village and the port of the island.
The traffic on this port attracts most of the facilities on the island to concentrate in here in Scala, so it appears that it has more than the capital town Hora has.
It is the commercial centre of the island as numbers of businesses run in the port area and in the town.
The port is at the centre of a long coastline in the tight bay where the main quay lies and there is another port for yachts in Netia at the northern part of Skala.
The harbour road connects that Netia with the port and other places in the town. This road leads to the northern part and to the southern part of the island as well.
A main road starts from the ferry terminal across the town towards Hora, passing the hospital of the town at about 2.2 kilometres; almost half the way between Hora and Skala.
The main services are either on the ferry quay of within less than 100 metres from it. Among those businesses, services and facilities are the National Bank of Greece and the Commercial Banks with ATMs, at the port.
The post office, the police and the Municipal Tourist Office are all on the quay at the back of the passenger transit office and some hotels, restaurants, nightclubs and bars scatter in different places from the waterfront and up along the way to the centre of the town.
Those hotels in the Skala area are Effie Hotel, Blue Bay Hotel, Galini Hotel, Asteri Hotel, Casteli Hotel, Captain's House, Pension Maria Pascalidis, Suzana Rooms, Doatia Katina, Yvonne's Studios and Mathios Studios.
