Tasman lived a couple of days with the people of Tonga and called the beautiful Tongatapu Islands Amsterdam. The records have mentioned also that Captain Cook mentioned the islands of Tongataboo on 1777 in the Three Voyages Around the World, Volume 1.

Captain James Cook reached the islands at that time and called them "the friendly islands". He became a friend with the King "Tu'i Tonga", Fatafehi Paulaho and presented him with a tortoise from Madagascar, named Tu'i Malila and died on 19 May 1965.

It was the second longest-lived tortoise after Adwaita, which was lived during 1750-2006 in the Alipore Zoological Gardens in Kolkata, India. The Tu'i Malila is preserved in the Tongan National Centre in Tongatapu.

On the Road of the Winds: An Archaeological History of the Pacific Islands before European Contact: The Pacific Ocean covers one-third of the earth's surface and encompasses many thousands of islands, the home to numerous human societies and cultures.

Among these indigenous Oceanic cultures are the intrepid Polynesian double-hulled canoe navigators, the atoll dwellers of Micronesia, the statue carvers of remote Easter Island, and the famed traders of Melanesia.

Recent archaeological excavations, combined with allied research in historical linguistics, biological anthropology, and comparative ethnography, have begun to reveal much new information about the long-term history of these Pacific Island societies and cultures.

Illness and Cure in Tonga: Traditional and Modern Medical Practice: Siosiane Fanua Bloomfield looks at traditional cures and their practitioners in Tongatapu and the remote Niuas of Tonga, in her study. She has a special emphasis on maternal and child health, and family planning.

As she examines values and belief systems related to sicknesses and their cures, Siosiane discovers that Tongans are very much concerned with health, but their emphasis is on the social aspect of health, and particularly the spiritual side of social life.
