Which of the Municipalities of Corfu Attracts You Most?

The Municipality of Corfu stretches to 41,9 square kilometres in the northwest of the Island of Corfu and it has 39,487 inhabitants. The largest city in the municipality is the Capital City of Corfu. It is also the capital of the prefecture of Corfu and the seat of the Municipality of Corfu. The other populated towns in the municipality are Kanali, Potamos, Kontokali, Alepou and Gouvia. There are tow motorways that link the town at the northwest and at the south. The Greek National Road 24 link the centre, and the northwest to Corfu and Palaiokastritsa and the Greek National Road 25 link the centre with the south, the southeast and Corfu to Lefkimi.

The Ionian Academy was a Greek University during 1824-1864 and now Corfu Town is home to the Ionian University. The old town of Corfu is in the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2007. The town overlooks the Bay of Garitsa with its narrow cobblestones streets and at the top point of the town is Palaio Frourio the old Venetian castle.

The first theatre in Corfu was the San Giacomo Roman stone styled theatre, which has prepared lately to be the national theatre or the Municipal Theatre of Corfu. It is the only big historical theatre in the entire municipalities of Corfu.

The municipality of Corfu has many museums exhibiting historical items, artworks, coins and folklore, such as the Archaeological Museum of Corfu, Museum of Banknotes of Corfu and the Museum of Asian Art. See museums of Corfu here.

Some international movies had been shot in the Island of Corfu among them is James Bond's movie "For Your Eyes Only" in 1981, starred Roger Moore and Carole Bouquet. The movie is about a ship sank offshore of the coast of Albania and the search for the valuable cargo of the lost ship.

Some scenes of the movie "The Executioner" in the 1970s starring George Peppard and Joan Collins were also shot in Corfu. Besides, the BBC TV series in 1987 and the 2005 BBC version of "My Family and Other Animals" included scenes from Corfu. Gerald Durrell published a book about his childhood in Corfu in the late 1930s.

The Municipality of Feakes or Faiakon Municipality is on the eastern coast at the north of the Municipality of Corfu. It lies exactly between Kerkireon / Corfu Municipality at the south, the Municipality of Thinalio at the north, the Municipality of Kassopaia or Kassopea or Kassopei at the northeast, the Municipality of Esperii at the northwest, the Municipality of Agios Georgios at the northwest, the Municipality of Paleokastrites at the west and the sea at the east.

The Town of Hypsos, Ypsos or Ipsos is the seat of Feakes or Faiakon Municipality. The beautiful resorts in this municipality are Ipsos and Pyrgi with the beautiful beaches at the northeast including Barbati, Nisaki, Agni and the beach at Avlaki Bay.

The Municipality of Kassopaia, Kassopei or Kassopea stretches 34 square kilometres at the northeastern tip of the Island of Corfu in a location very close to Albania, overlooking the Ionian Sea that separates the island from Albania and Greece.

The Strait of Kerkyra is on the sea at the north and the northwest of it. The Municipality of Thinalians, Thinalion, Thinalio or Thinali and the Municipality of Feakes borders Kassiopi Municipality at the west.

There are 2,749 inhabitants in the entire Municipality of Kassopaia, 46 out of those populations are in the seat of the municipality, Gimari. The most populated towns in the municipality are the Town of Kassiopi, the Town of Nisaki and the Town of Agnitsini.

Villages, resorts and even the attractive harbour remained neglected for some hundred of years until lately when the municipality began to develop them.

This beautiful municipality with beautiful villages and beautiful beaches is the best destination nowadays for Italians and British. They travel to it in great waves in summer.

Therefore, the municipality developed the modern part of Kassopei to serve the tourism industry of the Island of Corfu, although lot of work seems underway to link the towns in the interior.

The coastal towns are very busy in the hot season. There are many resorts, expensive villas, paraphernalia, many supermarkets, and banks with ATMs, travel agencies, motor boats for adults and children, and daily excursions from the harbour to the entire island and to Albania via Corfu.

Stunning beaches in the municipality attracts many seasonal travellers to this part of the island, although it is a long way from the Capital City Corfu. However, many beautiful beaches and places beyond those beaches are only accessible by sea, foot or by horses.

The towns and the beautiful places in the Municipality of Kassopaia are Kalami, Imerolia, Kellia, Podolakkos, Lithiasmenos, Agios Georgios, Agios Stefanos, Kokkokylas, Kokkini and Santa. See beautiful towns in Corfu. There are few hotels such as Nissaki Beach Hotel and Katia Apartments.
