Municipalities of Kefalonia!

The municipalities of Kefalonia include Ithaca as municipality and Omala as community. There are eight municipalities in Cephalonia Island.

Those municipalities in alphabetical order are -

the Municipality of Argostoli, the Municipality of Eleios - Pronnoi, the Municipality of Erisos, the Municipality of Ithaca, the Municipality of Leivathos, the Municipality of Paliki, the Municipality of Pylaros and the Municipality of Sami and the community of Omala.

The Municipalities of Kefalonia:

The Municipality of Argostoli or Argostolion is the first biggest land among the municipalities of Kefalonia. It stretches 152 square kilometres along the western coast to the north and inland to the east, in the Island of Cephalonia with Argostoli as the seat of the municipality.

Argostoli is the capital of the island since 1757 and the old capital was Agios Georgios or Kastro. See beautiful towns in Cephalonia.

The Municipality of Argostoli includes Spilia, Helmata, Kompothekrata, Lassi, Minies and 10 former communities as Agona, Davgata, Dilinata, Zola, Thinia, Kourouklata, Nifi, Troyiannata, Faraklata and Farsa.

There are more than 12,589 inhabitants in the Municipality of Argostolion. The large populated towns are Argostoli, Dilinata, Faraklata and Kardakata.

The municipality of Argostoli has some resorts such as Makris Gialos, Lassi Peninsula, Minies and Platis Gialos west of Argostoli. The ruins of the Doric temple from the 6th century BC are in Minies. The other villages, settlements and locations are Zola on the northern bay at Ionio Pelagos at the borders of Paliki Municipality, Agonas and Nyfio near it at the southeast, Thinea, Kardakata, Kontogourata, Kourouklata, Farsa, Dilinata, Davgata, Faraklata, Razata, Drapano on the bay of Argostoli or near it at the south of Zola and near the capital.

Some other villages and locations include Nisos Kefallinia east of Argostoli, Troianata and Mitakata southeast of Argostoli, Kompothekrata south of Argostoli, and Balsamata, Omala, Aghios Eleftherios, Michata, Moni Aghiou Gerasimou and Epanochori in Omala Community at the east of Argostoli.

The Municipality of Eleios - Pronnoi, Elio-Proni or Eliou Pronon is in the southeastern part of Cephalonia Island, east of Livathos Municipality and south of Sami Municipality.

There are more than 4,000 inhabitants in the entire Municipality of Eleios- Pronnoi. The most populated towns are Pronnoi, Pastra, Tzanata, Mavrata and Katelios.

The other villages that make the municipal district of Poros are Tzanata, Kampitsata, Riza and Asprogerakas. Pastra is the seat of the municipality of Eleios - Pronnoi and there are more than 175 inhabitants in the town. See beautiful towns in Cephalonia Island.

The Vohinas River runs in the municipality and there are two bridges crossing the river in Poros that separates Aragia Beach from the centre of Poros.

The villages of the municipality spread between the borders of Sami municipality and Livathos Municipality and the southeastern coast up inland.

Those villages and locations include, Plateies, Atsoupades, Kourata, Mavrata, Kato Katelios, Thiramonas, Chionata, Valerianos, Koletis, Kremmydi, Aleimmatas, Skala, Fanies, Arginia and Ratzakli.

In addition, there are Pastra, Spathi, Agios Gergios, Asprogerakas, Anninata, Vlachoulata, Agia Eirini, Elio-Proni, Kapandriti, Xenopoulo, Kampitsata, Tzanata, Riza, Andriolata, Lefkes, Slavata, Poros, Moni Yperagias Theotokou Atrou, Agios Nikolaos and Kateleios.

The Municipalities of Kefalonia:

The Municipality of Erisos or Erissos Municipality stretches into 78 square kilometres in the north of the Island of Kefalonia covering the peninsula at the north of Pylaros Municipality.

There are more than 1,970 inhabitants in the entire municipality. The seat of the municipality of Erissos is Vasilikiades.

The large populated towns in the Municipality of Erisos are Antipata, Mesovounia, Vasilikiades and Komitata. There are two small harbours in the municipality, Fiskardo and Asos or Assos. See beautiful Kefalonia towns.

Fruits, vegetables, grains and olive cover the green plain of the municipality. The natural beauty spreads to cover the heights in this municipality too. There are some traditional villages where people engage in farming and fishing.

The settlements and other locations in the Municipality of Erissos include Antipata, Germenata and Markantonata at the western cost at the north, Fiskardo at the eastern coast of the north, Psilithrias, Steliata, Barzoukata, Tselentata, Agrilias, Pekoulari and Stranidi at the eastern coast of the north and Assos on the western coast of the north.

The other interior villages are Tzamarellata, Touliata, Ventourata, Evreti, Chalikeri, Markoulata, Konidarata, Vigli, Zampelata, Vassilikiades, Kouloumoi, Messovounia, Drapanitika, Pyrgos, Kothreas, Plagia, Kokolata, Erissos, Defaranata, Karya, Patrikata and Komitata. The Municipality of Leivathos or Livathos Municipality covers an area of 63 square kilometres at the southwest of the Island of Cephalonia and it is at the south of Argostoli, covering the southwest area of the island with its eleven communities and many settlements.

There are more than 4,800 inhabitants in the entire municipality. The seat of the Municipality of Livathos is Kerameies. The populated towns in the municipality are Svoronata, Vlachata, Peratata and Metaxata.

There are many small farms and eucalyptus, olive, palm trees, vegetables and citrus cover the green fertile land. Locals engage in farming and fishing.

The earthquake in the 17th century damaged some parts of the Municipality of Leivathos. However, there are still historical founds to be seen in the municipality.

The discoveries made during the 1930s resulted in founds of four Mycenaean tombs and ancient grain silos carved of a rock. The ruined houses of Agios Georgios are under the castle. The preserved fortress is about 16 square kilometres and it has walls that reach 600 metres high.

The Municipality of Paliki is the second biggest in land area among the municipalities of Kefalonia. It occupies 145 square kilometres at the west of Cephalonia Island and there are more than 7,836 inhabitants in the municipality.

The Peninsula of Paliki or the Peninsula of Lixouri links to the Island of Cephalonia from the northwestern part.

The ancient name of Paliki was Pale or Pali. The new Lixouri replaced most of the ancient settlement of Paliki after the earthquakes that damaged the ancient settlements and part of it at the north of Lixouri remains as an archaeological site officially called Dimos Palikis.

There are more than 18 villages in the Peninsula of Paliki. The seat of the Municipality of Paliki is Lixouri. The Municipality of Paliki is the greenest municipality in the island of Cephalonia with well-organized agricultural sector.

The Municipality of Pylaros, Pylarou, or Pylarei covers 81 square kilometres south of Erissos Municipality, northwest of Sami Municipality and northeast of Argostoli Municipality. There are more than 1,600 inhabitants in the entire Municipality of Pylarou.

The seat of the Municipality of Pylaros is Agia Effimia or Agia Evfimia near the northeastern coast. The most populated towns in the municipality are Makryotika and Agia Effimia.

However, there are more than 24 villages including Drakopoulata, Pylarei, Makriotika, Potamianata, Xiropotamos, Raftopoulata, Bekatorata, Antipata and Divarata.

The rest of the villages are Logarata, Loukata, Drakata, Markata, Vasilopoulata, Lekasata, Anomeria, Krini, Hamolakkos, Feredinata, Tarkasata, Georgkata, Karousata, Dendrinata, Rautopoulata and Siniori.

There are two mountains in the area, Mount Agia Dinati and Mount Kalon Oros at the borders and two bays, Agia Effimia bay and Myrtos bay. The area is fertile and green and the people engage in stockbreeding, small farming and tourism.

The Municipality of Pylaros enhanced the diary farming in the municipality and the Feta cheese production and established an olive museum in 2010 and it offers bus services to the long beach of Myrtos.

The Municipality of Sami is the third biggest in land area among the municipalities of Kefalonia. It lies on the centre of the eastern coast of the Island of Cephalonia. The seat of the municipality is the Town of Sami. See Kefalonia beautiful towns.

Sami Municipality stretches along the eastern coast covering an area of 129 square kilometres, which makes it the third largest area after Argostoli and Lixouri.

There are 2,895 inhabitants in the entire Municipality of Sami. The other largest towns in regards to the population are Digaleto, Grizata, and Karavomylos.

There are eight municipalities of Kefalonia and some communities and settlements. Seven municipalities of Cephalonia are in the Island of Kefalonia and the eighth is the Municipality of Ithaca.
