Shaolin Temple in China
I love the ancient Shaolin temple in China... that is because the ancient Buddhist Monastery, the Shaolin Temple in China is beyond expectation of martial arts, or by other words Shaolin Kung Fu!
It may not be exactly what you expect, but that's probably always been the case. Today's modern Shaolin Temple is a real tourist attraction, but that doesn't change the fact that it's a profoundly holy place.
I arrived with plenty of cash as well as traveler's checks, just in case I needed them for something amazing. No sooner had I arrived than a kind monk approached me and offered to teach me Kung Fu, but I wasn't there to train.
I immediately started hearing Bruce Lee's catlike sounds, and pictured scenes from Enter the Dragon. An old monk walked over and offered to teach me Kung Fu for a fee while another monk was thrilled to offer exceptional deals for ipods, watches and cameras.
I have been learning for a while, and this was almost a pilgrimage for me plus I just feel more alive around ancient stones, there's something magical about old stones and temples that words can scarcely describe or do justice.
I was there to explore and experience the heart of Kung Fu on the planet, and it was a beautiful place to explore to be sure and if you need a watch or an ipod or a camera, you can even find a deal there.
It's definitely not the Temple it once was, even the Shaolin temple has changed with the times. I regret that I did not have more time to explore and speak with the monks, but I did get some monumental photographs.
At the end of the day, the sunset at the Shaolin Temple in China is beyond description. Bring a warm blanket (or buy one there). Bring a great camera (or buy one there). Bring some bottled water (or buy some there). But most of all, bring your imagination because this is a most inspiration spot unlike any other on the planet.
Looking back I can hardly believe the intensity of that old temple and the chi power gathered there for centuries, but its not the temple it once was, and really is more about acrobatics nowadays than Kung Fu. As an added bonus, it's a great spot to take some photographs and is truly a remarkably intense spot.
